Captain Harley Irwin is looking forward to the challenge of the Professional Development League as Wanderers kick off their campaign at Charlton Athletic.
The Whites face a second visit to London in the space of five days when they take on the Addicks after losing their Premier League Cup opener at Queens Park Rangers last Friday night.
It’s all new territory for the U21s after the Academy’s up-grade in status but Irwin is confident they will be a competitive outfit once fully wound up.
“I don’t think a 4-1 defeat was a true reflection of the game at Loftus Road,” said the midfielder ahead of Tuesday's trip to The Valley (KO 2pm). “We had a lot of chances, although in general I don't think we deserved to win the game. I think we'll get stronger and better as the season goes on. It's definitely a step up, but I don't think it's anything that the lads aren't ready for.
“I just think it's a case of getting a few games under our belt and we'll get up to speed. I'm confident that the lads will be fine. It's not ideal to lose the first game but I've got nothing but belief in the group of players that we've got and I'm sure that tomorrow will be more positive.”
Wanderers included two more new faces in their side at QPR with former Aston Villa youngster Max Lott and ex-Bromley youth defender Charlie Paye signing deals after impressing during pre-season.
There were also debuts for Finn Wilkinson and Tom King as the Whites continue to build for a new level of football and Irwin is excited at the prospect of facing a full fixture programme against higher quality opposition under the guidance of Julan Darby as coach.
“It's massive for us,” added the 19-year-old, who is starting his second season as a professional with the Whites. “We've got a good group of players, so I think it's important that we do have a lot of games for that group of players to develop in.
“It's only going to make us better playing against better opponents, so I'm really looking forward to it and can't wait to see what the season brings.
“It’s a big year for all of us and that's why we need to be playing games. A lot of games this year is key for our development, so we can try and push and be closer to the first team.”
While Wanderers grow on the pitch, the Academy is also making strides off it with an improved development pathway for staff in coaching and non-coaching roles.
As well as internal promotions for Darby and U18s’ boss Danny Clarke, Alex Norwood (above) has taken on the additional role of Assistant Academy Manager.
As well as continuing his role as Head of Education, Norwood will also now support Academy Manager Dave Gardiner in the strategic leadership, management and continued development of the Academy.
“I’m delighted Alex has accepted the additional role,” said Gardiner. “The full-time staff in the Academy all played such an important role in the club achieving Category 2 Status and Alex was one of those who was instrumental in our success.
“I’m excited to work closer with Alex as we continue to implement and achieve our long-term objectives and achieve operational excellence. Together we will focus on embedding Category 2 standards and compliance as we ensure the Academy is aligned with the Elite Player Performance Plan.
“There is a lot of hard work ahead for everyone at the Academy, but it is something we are all relishing now the new season is up and running.”
