Members of the Bolton Wanderers family came together on Monday evening to mark the 80th anniversary of the Burnden Park Disaster and remember the 33 supporters who tragically lost their lives.
A memorial service held at Bolton Parish Church brought together relatives of the 33, supporters and members of the wider community to pay their respects and reflect on the events of March 9th, 1946.
The service was led by Rev Hannah Lane, the Vicar of Bolton, and Cllr John Walsh, as those in attendance gathered to remember the supporters who lost their lives and the families affected by the tragedy.
Representing the club on the evening were Head Coach Steven Schumacher and Captain Eoin Toal, while Wanderers legend John McGinlay was also in attendance alongside former players including Gordon Taylor. Club staff joined many Bolton Wanderers supporters and families connected to the tragedy for the poignant service.
The Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton were also present, along with other local civic figures, reflecting the importance of the anniversary to the town and its community.
Monday evening’s service provided a moment for remembrance and reflection, ensuring the supporters who lost their lives continue to be honoured 80 years on. Prayers, readings and tributes formed part of the service, with those in attendance gathering to pay tribute to the memory of the 33 and the families affected by the tragedy.
Relatives of those who lost their lives were present alongside supporters of all ages, demonstrating the enduring connection between the club, the town and those whose lives were impacted by the events at Burnden Park.
Bolton Wanderers will always remember the 33.
