Wanderers Sign Canadian Striker

Bolton Wanderers are delighted to announce the signing of Canada international striker Theo Bair on a season-long loan from Ligue 1 side AJ Auxerre, with the option of a permanent deal, subject to EFL, International and VISA clearances.

The 27 year-old arrives with a proven record in front of goal in the United Kingdom. His breakthrough came at Motherwell, where a 15-goal campaign in 2023/24 saw him named the club’s Player of the Season and selected in the PFA Scotland Premiership Team of the Year, earning him a four-year move to Auxerre in France.

The striker’s path to Europe began in Ottawa, where he came through grassroots football before being scouted by the Vancouver Whitecaps and moving across Canada at just 15. He made his MLS debut in 2019, spent a promotion-winning loan spell with HamKam in Norway, and moved to Scotland with St Johnstone in January 2022 before his switch to Fir Park.

An all-round centre-forward who is strong in the air, comfortable with both feet and equally happy running in behind or linking play, Bair has 20-plus caps for Canada. He scored on his senior debut against Barbados in January 2020 and was part of his country’s squad at the 2024 Copa América.

He adds to Wanderers’ attacking ranks and links up with close friend and Canada teammate Jayden Nelson, who joined the club last week -  the pair have known each other for almost a decade and have roomed together on international duty.

Speaking to bwfc.co.uk, Bair said: “I’ve been aware of Bolton’s interest for some time now and when I saw the stadium I always knew that I wanted to be here. I’m so happy that it’s finally got over the line. I know the club has a rich history and belongs in the Premier League, so obviously the goal is to get back there - but I’m just so happy to be here.

“When I mentioned Bolton to my family, everyone went, ‘oh, Bolton - the Bolton.’ It was an exciting thing for all of us. When I first got here I got goosebumps looking outside because this is my dream.

“For any fans who don’t know how I play - my coach in Scotland used to describe me as an all-rounder. I can hold the ball up, I can shoot with both feet, I like to run in behind and I like to link up play. But goals are the main thing. I like to score goals. That’s my favourite thing to do and the best feeling you can have in the world.

“I want to help the team as much as possible, whether that’s goals, whether that’s holding the ball up, whatever it may be. I want this team to be successful and to win games of football.

“I’ve known Jayden for almost 10 years and we’ve roomed together with the national team, so we’re close. I told him he should come here and then he told me that I should come too - so we kind of convinced each other that this is the right place. He’s absolutely electric and the fans have already seen a glimpse of that. I can’t wait to connect with him and start scoring some goals.

“I couldn’t be more excited to play in front of all the fans. I’m looking forward to spending this season with them and smashing it.”
