Abbie Brown started playing football at the age of five with Horsforth St Margaret’s boys team, beginning a journey that has taken her from Yorkshire to the United States, Portugal, Israel and ultimately Bolton Wanderers.
As a youngster, Abbie also represented Old Modernians, Yorkshire Amateurs and Leeds United Centre of Excellence before moving into open-age football with Bradford City.
Her career then took her overseas, with spells at Middle Tennessee State University and Lenoir-Rhyne University in the United States, as well as Asheville City FC. She later played for Valadares Gaia FC in Portugal and Emek Hefer FC in Israel before returning to England with Leeds United.
Abbie names signing her first professional contract as the proudest moment of her career so far, while her time in the United States brought a number of individual honours. She earned All-Conference and All-Region recognition in both 2017 and 2018 at Lenoir-Rhyne, was named a Scholar All-American in 2018 and also received the university’s Offensive MVP award that year.
After returning to Leeds United, Abbie was named the club’s Women’s Player of the Season for 2020/21 and was part of the side which won the FA National League Plate in 2023.
Her move to Wanderers followed a relocation from Yorkshire to Lancashire for work. While looking for a new club, Abbie was impressed by Bolton’s investment in the Women’s team, the support surrounding the side and the club’s ambitions for its future.
An attack-minded forward, Abbie looks to create goalscoring opportunities and is happy to shoot from distance with either foot. She identifies finishing as her biggest strength.
Her ambition with Wanderers is to help the club achieve promotion into Tier 4 and then continue building from there.
The number 11 shirt also feels appropriate for Abbie. Her favourite number growing up was five, which she wore as a youngster, but she likes the traditional association between number 11 and her attacking position.
Get to know Abbie
Abbie’s first footballing idol was much closer to home – her dad. The pair would play football together every evening at their local park until it became too dark to continue.
Among the professional players she admired growing up were Everton’s Tim Cahill, along with Robin van Persie and Gareth Bale.
One of Abbie’s earliest memories as a supporter is attending the Women’s FA Cup final between Leeds United and Arsenal when Sue Smith was playing for Leeds.
Away from football, she enjoys going to the gym, spending time with friends and family, walking her dog and listening to music.
Abbie also combines playing for Wanderers with a career as a firefighter with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service.
Her pre-match routine is straightforward – plenty of upbeat music to get her ready for kick-off.
And something supporters might not know? Abbie has a Romanian rescue dog.
