The Youth Team takes centre stage tonight (Monday) when they face Derby County at the Toughsheet Community Stadium.

The young Whites meet Derby in the FA Youth Cup (KO 7pm) with the winners earning a trip to Manchester United in round three.

Julian Darby’s side set up a clash with the Rams by beating Blackpool 2-0 at Chorley’s Victory Park in the first round and their reward is the opportunity to try and progress at Wanderers’ home venue.

“The lads have just got to go out and enjoy it. It’s a fantastic experience to play on the pitch here and especially a night game,” said Youth Team boss Darby.

“Last year the current second-years had the good fortune of doing it against Accrington. It didn't come out our way then, but the lads have given themselves another opportunity this evening.”

While Wanderers play in the EFL Youth Alliance – and currently sit fifth in their group – Derby operate in the top tier of the U18 Premier League.

The Rams knocked out Mansfield Town in round one with Wanderers now seeking an upset to set up a meeting with record 11-time winners United before Christmas.

“We’re under no illusions it will be a tough game,” added Darby – a former first-team coach at Derby.

“They're a Category One Academy and a top-half Category One side with some good players.  But it's a game you have to relish and not fear. We have some good players too, but they have to gel and work as a team.

“Let's see what happens on Monday night. Hopefully we can at least match them and the lads can come out on top.”
