Schumacher | Unbelievable Spirit

Taylor-Blackett team celebration Wycombe

Steven Schumacher praised the ‘unbelievable’ spirit of his players after Wanderers again pulled off a stunning fightback.

The Whites were 2-0 down going into the final couple of minutes of normal time as in-form Wycombe looked set for a fourth successive win to firm up their place in the top six.

But once again Wanderers showed their never-say-die to score three times in eight minutes to extend their unbeaten run to 11 games and just about stay on the coat tails of Cardiff City following their loss to new League One leaders Lincoln City earlier in the day.

“A brilliant three points in the end. It was a bit of a mad game,” admitted Schumacher after three of his substitutes – Ruben Rodrigues, Mason Burstow and Corey Blackett-Taylor – grabbed the goals that gave his side a 12th home win of the season.

“I thought we started the game really well and we probably should have been ahead in the first minute when Thierry gets in. We had another couple of breaks and foe five or 10 minutes we looked really sharp.

“And then credit to Wycombe. We said in the week that these are a good team, well organised, and they showed that. They pressed us really well, made it difficult for us to get through them, and they were a threat with their play.

“The goals that we conceded to go in 2-0 at half-time were disappointing, but it's a chance for us to show character. We spoke at half-time about doing the basics better, landing on second balls, trying to be a bit more aggressive, and I felt we were better in the second half and three goals in the last five minutes is, again, unbelievable spirit from the players, so congratulations to them.

“The second half performance was great, again not perfect, but we've done enough to win a game, which is not easy at this level, so I'm made up for everyone.”

Ruben Rodrigues sparked the comeback with his first Wanderers’ goal before Mason Burstow thumped in a header to make it 11 goals for the season and three in his last four games.

And Blackett-Taylor then stole the show when the on-loan winger capped a superb second-half performance with a brilliant strike five minutes into added time to keep Schumacher’s men on the march.

“He was such a threat,” added the Whites’ boss. “He's up against probably the second-quickest player in League One in Fred Onyedinma and got the better of him a couple of times on the outside.

“To stand up the cross for Mason's goal was excellent and then he's two-one against him for his match-winning goal. I know their player’s slipped as he came inside, but to hit that shot and to finish it that way with that sort of quality is excellent.

“I'm delighted for him. He's had a good start since he's come here in January and we need him to continue.”
